Took the kids to Sauvie Island yesterday. It's a great place for swimming as it has nice sandy beaches, calm shallow water and great views. Drew and I tried to catch a few fish in the Columbia but had no luck. I was hoping to catch a few smallmouth bass along the pilings, but I suppose with all the people and activity, I couldn't expect too much.
Hunter did catch a little green tree frog and he and Drew were very excited. We saw a handful of the usual Ospreys and a Bald Eagle. Alison and I decided that this is going to become a common attraction for us. We really enjoyed it.

On our way home we stopped by the Kruger Farm on the Island and bought some berries and fruit...usually we cut flowers there, but due to the crazy weather, the flowers were not yet blooming.
Ok, so the only negative thing I can think of about my new job at The Axiom Group is that Engineers are provided Desktop PC's instead of Laptops. No big deal, but I did finally decide to just bite the bullet and get my own. The ability work from anywhere I want is just too much to give up.
I had an IBM ThinkPad when I worked at Corillian, and it was simply awesome. Fast bootup time, great performance and very thin\light weight. Alison has a ThinkPad now at her job at Intel and it's equally impressive. So I decided to get a loaded Lenovo. It ROCKS
Here are the specs...
All this for $1600.00. Sure $1600 is a lot of money but for what I got, I think this is a GREAT Value....

Well said Reverend! That certainly makes two of us.
It still amazes me that people continue to support Obama. Let me remind you of his stance on Gun Ownership.
I just completed a course for the State of Utah's concealed Handgun License. The reason I took this course, is that Utahs' CCW is honored in more states than any other CCW permit. With this one permit, I can legally carry in nearly half the United States.

You can see which states honor various permits at the following website HandgunLaw.US
In the Portland\Seattle Area you can take this class from Roger Moore at GunSmart - Firearm Training. It's a one day class and Roger does a great job of teaching safe Gun Handling as well as the Law regarding concealed Carry and lawful use of a handgun in self defense. The beauty of this class (for Oregonians) is that it satisfies the Oregon CCW requirements as well so you can kill 2 birds with one stone and get both your Utah CCW and your Oregon CCW by attending this course. Unfortunately, as an Oregon resident you need both the Utah CCW and the Oregon CCW as Oregon does not recognize out of State permits.
Lots of reading on forums this weekend. And it seems one of the most common questions out there is "What Handgun is best for Concealed Carry?".

Well...In my opinion the answer is easy. The best gun is the one that you WILL CARRY. My first handgun was the Taurus 99AFS. A gorgeous 9mm. I still have this gun and love it. It shoots great, handles flawlessly and is quite accurate. However, I've tried carrying it before and it's just too big. I cant conceal it comfortably without a coat or something. Since then I've went to the smaller S&W model 4014 (the Shorty 40). Its much easier to conceal and due to that fact, I find myself carrying it much more often. Keep this in mind when you purchase a handgun specifically for self defense and concealed carry.
Well, happy 4th of July everyone. Today, to enjoy the time off, we are taking the kids to the Sandy River's beautiful Dodge Park. It's one of our favorite places to go.

The kids enjoy playing in the sand, and trout fishing with Good Ol' Dad, and Daddy has lots of photo ops for various birds, etc. There is also a great hole under the bridge for salmon and steelhead. Last time we were there, the kids got to watch some young kid hook and land a nice winter steelie.

I've been reading up on the scope I put on my new AR-15. The guy at Sportsman's Warehouse talked me into a scope who's brand I had never heard of before. It's a Nitrex - 6-20x50AO and is made be Federal. At first, I have to admit, I was a little hesitant. I am a huge fan of Leupold and have used Leupold optics, pretty much exclusively all my life. However, in this case, I could not argue with the exceptional value of this new scope offered by Federal. I was looking at the Leupold VX-II 4-12X40mmAO which is a great value scope as well. However, the Nitrex is a superior Value in that it's brighter (50mm as opposed to 40mm), has greater reach 6-20 as opposed to 4-12, AND was cheaper by about $80! So I figured with Federal's name behind this and due to the guy's recommendation at Sportsman's Warehouse, that I'd go for it. I am NOT Disappointed. This scope seems like it's going to be really nice in low light shooting if and when I get the chance to get out and do some early morning raids on Coyotes and Varmints at 500+ Yards.

Yep, CNN is at it again. They are doing everything they can to derail McCain. According to the report, we dont really need McCain because the threat of Terrorism is no longer existent...Yep that's right America. Everything is fine. Go back to sleep.
Just got my Harris Bipod from UPS. I had a real hard time shooting over the weekend as I couldnt hold the rifle still enough to get a steady shot. I was using a bench rest but it was a little shaky from uneven ground and due to a little wear and tear.

Hopefully the new Bipod will do the trick. I found mine at DPMS's Online Store for about $50.00.
Just got back from Mimi and Papas ranch (Eagle Point) where the kids have spent the last 2 weeks. Although Andrew Broke his leg, Papa seems to have survived the ordeal not too much worse for where.
Spent most of the weekend breaking in the barrel of my new Rock River AR-15.
We went through the formal barrel break in procedure that I found on this site's reloading and shooting tech tips section.
After breaking the barrel in and sighting it in at 100 yards, we then shot what I call "Synthetic Gophers". These make for a challenging shot at 100 yards and are a blast to shoot. I bought a bag of 24 at Bi-Mart for $15.
I cant believe my wife let me do it, but I just bought a Rock River Arms - A4 Varmint (AR-15). It ABSOLUTELY Kicks Ass.

I did a ton of research when deciding which AR-15 to purchase. I looked at Armalite, Olympic Arms, Bushmaster, Remington's new R-15 VTR, the DPMS Panther Bull 24 special, and of course, the Rock River Arms A4 Varmint.
My budget was about $1500 and given all the various configurations, the Rock River offered the best features\updgrades in that price range. The DMPS was a very close second.
My Eventual Configuration...
I found mine through a private local dealer named Angelito Hamto - Gun-Zone out in Sandy, Oregon. Not only did he have the exact spec in stock, his price of $1,285.00 was lower than other comperables I could find on the .NET and other local gun shops. Angelito was great to work with. He is very professional, very knowledgeable, and simply a nice guy.
